This book is mostly concerned on the experimental research of the nonlinear optical characteristics of various media, low- and high-order harmonic generation in different materials, and formation, and nonlinear optical characterization of clusters. We also demonstrate the inter-connection between these areas of nonlinear optics.Nonlinear optical properties of media such as optical limiting can be applied in various areas of science and technology. To define suitable materials for these applications, one has to carefully analyse the nonlinear optical characteristics of various media, such as the nonlinear refractive indices, coefficients of nonlinear absorption, saturation absorption intensities, etc. Knowing the nonlinear optical parameters of materials is also important for describing the propagation effects, self-interaction of intense laser pulses, and optimisation of various nonlinear optical processes. Among those processes one can admit the importance of the studies of the frequency conversion of coherent laser sources. The area of interest for nonlinear optical characterization of materials is also closely related with new field of nanostructures formation and application during laser-matter interaction. We show how the nonlinear optical analysis of materials leads to improvement of their high-order nonlinear optical response during the interaction with strong laser fields. Ablation-induced nanoparticles formation is correlated with their applications as efficient sources of coherent short-wavelength photons. From other side, recent achievements of harmonic generation in plasmas are closely related with the knowledge of the properties of materials in the laser plumes. All of these studies are concerned with the low-order nonlinear optical features of various materials. The novelty of the approach developed in present book is related with inter-connection of those studies with each other.

The pulsed laser ablation in liquid media (PLAL) is a rapidly emerging technique in material science for fabricating metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles. The advantage of this method over the conventional chemical methods is the lower cost, high purity and absence of defects in the formed nanoparticles (NPs). The technique requires the minimum amount of chemical species for synthesis compared to the conventional chemical process and provides greater flexibility in controlling the properties of NPs by suitable choice of laser parameters and liquid medium. This work discuss effect of various laser parameters, surrounding liquid and surfactants on synthesized metal oxide nanostructures. Different approaches to extend PLAL technique to multicomponent material fabrication has been discussed. These multicomponent nanocomposites exhibit modified optical properties, enhanced stability and functionalities.

Reconstruction of large and complex bone segments is one of the most challenging problems facing modern clinical practice. In order to diminish the donor site morbidity associated with autogenous bone transfer, synthetic biomaterials are being used nowadays to regenerate lost bone due to disease or trauma. The majority of currently applied regenerative medicine approaches rely on extrinsic vascularization, which could not be applied to reconstruction after cancer ablation. This book presents an experimental pilot study introducing for the first time the concept of axial vascularization of bone substitutes to regenerate mandibular defects in a large animal model (goat). The book is also presenting a review about conventional reconstructive techniques, describes the fine details of a novel model for axial vascularization and discusses its results in comparison with literature. The book contains valuable details suitable for graduate, and post-graduate researchers in the field of Reconstructive Maxillofacial surgery as well as biotechnology and Regenerative medicine.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice, and one of the main causes of ictus and strokes. Despite the advances in its comprehension, its thorough characterization and the choice of the most suitable therapy are still an open issue. Radiofrequency catheter ablation (CA) is becoming one of the most popular solutions. Yet, very little is known about its impact on heart substrate, thus leading to an inaccurate selection of positive responders to therapy, hence, the need for advanced signal processing tools able to quantify such impact in an objective and quantitative manner. Valuable information about AF can be provided by multilead electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings of heart electrical activity in a noninvasive and cost-effective manner. However, most of standard techniques are affected by several issues, such as their manual computation in only one ECG lead. This work aims at exploiting multilead ECG spatial variability through multivariate decomposition techniques, so as to extract proper predictors of AF termination by CA. This approach would help selecting a patient-tailored therapy, thus increasing CA success rate.

During complex liver interventions, navigation support is used for improved visualization of the vascular structure of the liver and for guidance of resection and ablation tools. One problem that arises during the use of such a system is that it is very challenging to provide efficient and intuitive means for the interaction between the surgeon and the virtual information displayed by the navigation system. The aim of this work was to develop a usable human-machine interface for the surgeon in the sterile area adapted to the existing liver navigation system. As claimed in the IEC 60601-1-6 and IEC 62366 for medical devices, a user profile was created, a task analysis and market research performed and platform capabilities and constraints analyzed. In the iterative development process a wired remote control composed of a programmable touchscreen and a 3D mouse was devised. Part of the development was the design of a suitable case which is usable in clinical environment. The prototype, build of cardboard, in rapid prototyping and out of aluminum was evaluated in two workshops by surgeons and also in a usability test with 15 test persons.

Simulation of RFA of liver tumors

Local therapy with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an important method for treating liver tumors mostly in early stage, which has been increasingly used in recent years. RFA utilizes an RF current that is applied to the target tissue through an electrode connected with a power generator and percutaneously inserted into the tumor, the electrode power causes the tissue temperature rise required for destroying cancer cells. If RF thermal ablation entails numerous advantages - such as high repeatability of treatments, suitability for patients who can t undergo surgery, quick procedure and fast recovery -, there are still some inconveniences and difficulties coupled with this technique. One of these problems is the so called heat sink effects, resulting from the presence of large blood vessels close to the electrode tip. Finally, a comparison work has been conducted between two different ablation modalities (RF versus MW) showing similarities and differences until the conclusion that currently the RFA treatment is the most suitable treatment for tumors in early stage, small and localized.

PDT versus APC in Barrett's Esophagus

The aim of endoscopic ablation in the lower third of the esophagus is to eliminate the intestinal metaplasia and hence the risk of developing adenocarcinoma. Different methods have been advocated but, to date, none of them has been shown to be the standard. We used different methods according to individualized selection criteria. We support the use of PDT for patients with grade-4 IPN. Supplementary methods for the rest of Barrett are of particular value. EMR is suitable for elevated lesion with suspicion of IPN, as it provides considerable material for exact histopathological examination. APC is needed for the elimination of the residual islands of Barrett's epithelium. APC alone could be enough for grade-3 IPN within Barrett's muosa less than 5 cm in length, as it showed esophageal stricture when used for longer lesions. Endoscopic ablation therapy is highly effective in eradicating intraepithelial neoplasia (IPN) within Barrett's esophagus. The success in totally eradicating the metaplastic epithelium was much lower. Long-term follow-up is inevitable to prove the effectiveness of ablation therapy in reducing the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

Microwave ablation (MWA) is one of the emerging technologies in the treatment of liver, lung, prostate and breast cancers. This study is aimed at simulating an appropriate frequency for breast cancer ablation with a suitable microwave antenna. The antennas for breast cancer MWA were designed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) software in COMSOL MULTIPHYSICS version 4.4. A total number of four antenna types were designed and simulated of which 3 of the antennas were selected based on the variation in their reflection coefficient, total power density and Specific Absorption Ratio. The result shows that frequency affects power dissipation into the breast tissue. Compromising between power dissipation, reflection coefficient and diameter of necrotic tissue, simulated monopole antenna with radiating length 8mm operating at 6.61 GHz produced better and efficient power dissipation into the breast tissue. Such suitable frequency is significant to meet the dielectric property of the tissue (breast) needed to achieve a better coagulation zone with minimal injury to surrounding normal tissues or cells.
