Interventional Radiology Second Edition by Hector Ferral and Jonathan Lorenz details image-guided procedures and prepares you to diagnose the full range of arterial, venous, nonvascular, and oncological conditions. Included in this book are 100 cases covering congenital malformations to acquired pathologies, illustrated with clear, high-quality images and now with questions and answers for review. For maximum ease of self-assessment, each case begins with the clinical presentation on the right-hand page; study that and then turn the page for imaging findings, differential diagnoses with the definitive diagnosis, essential facts, pearls and pitfalls, and more.Key Highlights500 high-resolution images guide the reader through the casesThe importance of the RV/LV ratio in CT evaluation of pulmonary embolismCutting-edge advances in prostate embolization, thermal ablation applications, the use of IVC filters, and the management of vascular malformations and portal hypertensionArterial interventions with tips for aggressive management of below the knee arterial complicationsEvaluation of AAA stent grafts and common types of endoleaks, with tips on how to identify and describe them

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Radio frequency ablation (RFA) is a medical procedure where part of the electrical conduction system of the heart, tumor or other dysfunctional tissue is ablated using high frequency alternating current to treat a medical disorder. An important advantage of RF current (over previously used low frequency AC or pulses of DC) is that it does not directly stimulate nerves or heart muscle and can therefore often be used without the need for general anaesthetic. RFA has become increasingly accepted in the last 15 years with promising results. RFA procedures are performed under image guidance (such as X-ray screening, CT scan or ultrasound) by an interventional radiologist or a cardiac electrophysiologist, a subspecialty of cardiologists.

Medical Image Guided Thermal Ablation

This book is timely because of the increasing popularity of minimally invasive and cost effective methods to ablate solid tumors. Medical image guided ablation using thermal energy sources such as radio-frequency, microwave, laser, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and cyrogenics have received much recent attention as minimally invasive strategies for the ablation of tumors. This text describes novel and practical image registration methods and mathematical models to predict the cellular response from magnetic resonance (MR) images, which guide and monitor therapy. Many clinical and animal model studies seeking to characterize the biological response to thermal ablations, localized drug release, and other MRI-guided therapies would benefit from this book. This text should be especially useful for medical, engineering, applied mathematics, physics, and computer science students, researchers, and clinicians.

Image Processing for Atrial Fibrillation Ablati...

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart arrhythmia and is associated with an increased risk of stroke. The current state-of-the-art treatment option is the minimally invasive catheter ablation. During such procedures, the four pulmonary veins attached to the left atrium are electrically isolated. New methods to guide these procedures are presented here. These methods include catheter reconstruction from two views to provide a 3-D visualization of the catheters with respect to a pre-operative data set of a patient's left atrium. A planning tool, the Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Planning Tool (AFiT), is presented to support cryo-balloon ablation procedures. During the ablation procedure itself, motion compensation is an important factor, in order to provide overlay images in sync with live fluoroscopic images. Cardiac and respiratory motion must be taken into account. Therefore, several novel approaches for motion compensation are presented. Methods for various settings during an ablation procedure are detailed.
