This book summarizes four decades of glacial-geomorphological field research in Central and High Asia in an attempt to draw a significant link between Quaternary science research and paleoclimatology. Based on the latest geomorphological findings, this study offers a large-scale reconstruction of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) that in High Asia encompassed a total expanse of no less than three million km 2 , including the Central Tibetan plateau with 2.4 million km 2 . The author offers a complete reconstruction of the Late Glacial, Holocene, and Historical glacier advances as well as the successive Postglacial ablation stages extending to the present. Taken together, the findings presented here provide the first insights into a global-climatic impact of the Last Glacial Maximum in Central and High Asia with respect to the current interglacial stage. The comparative data analyses point to an inland glaciation at subtropical latitude covering an area larger than the Nordic inland glaciation in Greenland. These insights are facilitated by a methodological approach, unprecedented in modern Quaternary research, that combines high-quality panoramic photography with high-resolution satellite imagery. This combination of terrestrial and aerial perspectives enables scientists and readers alike to visualize the geomorphology of the landscape as a three-dimensional space. The author's successful union of digital big data resources with classical geomorphological analysis offers an exciting new template for future research in Quaternary science and related fields.

Laser ablation in liquid is becoming an important technique for the generation of nanoparticles (NPs). Until now only pulsed lasers have been used, this is a pioneer work, using high-power, high-brightness continuous-wave (CW) fibre laser ablation in liquid, for the generation of NPs. A mechanism is proposed based on experimental observations, including high-speed imaging and emission spectroscopic analysis of the ablated plume. Three different target materials (Titanium, Nickel and Alpha-aluminium-oxide), submerged in either water or sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) solution at various concentrations were used. The characterisation of the generated metal-oxide NPs, in terms of size, size-distribution, shape, chemical composition and phase structure was carried out by UV-Vis photo-spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM with energy-dispersive X-rays spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. This study paves a route towards a new application of CW fibre lasers. The book is useful to engineering students, professional engineers, researchers, academicians and scientists in materials, NPs characterisation, mechanical, laser processing and related disciplines.

The combination of localized laser patterning and metal plating allows to replace conventional silver screen printing with nickel-copper plating to form inexpensive front contacts for crystalline silicon solar cells. In this work, a focus is put on effects that could cause inhomogeneous metal deposition and low metal contact adhesion. A descriptive model of the silicon nitride ablation mechanism is derived from SEM imaging and a precise recombination analysis using QSSPC measurements. Surface sensitive XPS measurements are conducted to prove the existence of a parasitic surface layer, identified as SiOxNy. The dense SiOxNy layer is an effective diffusion barrier, hindering the formation of a nickel silicide interlayer. After removal of the SiOxNy layer, cells show severe degradation caused by metal-induced shunting. These shunts are imaged using reverse biased electroluminescence imaging. A shunting mechanism is proposed and experimentally verified. New laser process sequences are devised and proven to produce cells with adhering Ni-Cu contacts. Conclusively the developed processes are assessed based on their industrial feasibility as well as on their efficiency potential.
